Mens Fashion Mistakes – Top 5

I’d like to say that fashion is about reflecting your own personality through clothing and that what you wear doesn’t really matter on a day-to-day basis. But we have to be honest – what you wear does matter and there are some fashion mistakes that men make over and over again. Let’s take a look at the top five.

Right Shoes, Wrong Socks

This is by far the biggest fashion faux pas that men make on a daily basis. You may think that your mis-matched Christmas socks are hidden from view by your suit pants, but believe me they’re not.

When wearing a suit you need to wear long dress socks that reach up to your calves. This means that when you cross your legs you can’t see any skin – just sock. Colour-wise your shoes, suit and socks should all match. Never (under any circumstances!) mix a black suit with brown shoes.

If you’re wearing casual clothes then short socks or no sock are the best options. Still make sure they match colour-wise though. Socks aren’t hard on the wallet – so there’s no excuse not to get them right.

Love your summer sandals but need some extra warmth in the winter? You will be immediately sent to the bottom of the ‘sexy-list’ if you even consider wearing socks and sandals. Either brave the cold or ditch the shoes.

Stuffed Pockets

If there’s any way to ruin your look – it’s stuffing your pockets full of bulky items. Yes, you can use your pockets to store some loose change, a slim wallet and perhaps your keys – but that is all.

If you regularly need to carry around multiple items then consider buying yourself a man-bag. It’s not as feminine as it sounds and man-bags are becoming increasingly popular both with business men and everyday men on the go.

Laptop protection is the most important type of bag you need, particularly if you travel to the office every day. There are a wide range of smart laptop protection and laptop sleeve bags on the market and they usually contain a range of other compartments so that you can store other belongings too – keeping the bulge down in your pockets!

Get the Right Fit

We know there’s a black American rap star in all of us trying to get out – but please don’t let him get out through your clothes.

You may think that baggy clothes are hiding a multitude of sins, when in fact they are doing you more harm than good. Unless you’re Eminem, then baggy clothing will just make you look sloppy.

If you have trouble finding clothes that fit right, then have a tailor make you something to fit. It may seem like an expensive option – but you’ll appreciate the results.

Backpacks are for Kids

Yes, backpacks are practical, cheap and they do the job. But if you’re wearing a nice suit – don’t ruin the look with a backpack reminiscent of your high school days. Backpacks are ok if you’re going camping or heading to the gym, but they should never be worn in the workplace.

As we mentioned above, think about upgrading to a laptop protection or laptop sleeve bag instead.

Accessorise Right

Accessories can make a man. Whether it’s some silver cufflinks, silk tie or new leather wallet, accessories are a great way to update your look.

Many men make the mistake of thinking that accessories don’t count, so they continue to use their tatty old wallet from the 90’s or wear their dad’s retro ties from the 70’s. Freshen up your look quickly and easily with some new accessories.
